Create a drop down and submenu in Joomla 1.5 using Extended Menu.
Many times when creating menus in Joomla it can seem difficult to get the results you want. On a site i am currently working on I wanted a top menu with dropdown and then for the sub menu to appear on the right side of the page.
Although all the settings in Extended Menu can be somewhat overwhelming it is actually very easy to set up. First download it from here Extended Menu. There is a version for Joomla 1.0 and 1.5 that can be downloaded from that page. After the download is complete install like any other module. Don't forget to enable it in the the admin > Extensions > Module Manger in Joomla 1.5. Here is also where you will make the settings that will allow Extended Menu to function like many other javascript menus. You will also need to download Son of Suckerfish. Of course there are problems with the normal Suckerfish in Internet Explorer (IE) thanks to Microsoft. Yeah they suck. Of course it works fine in Firefox. But for all the lame people stuck in Internet Explorer there is Son of Suckerfish that fixes IE's shortcomings. After you have it downloaded follow the instructions from the site as follows.
Install
Download and unzip the file into the (active / default) site templates folder
(e.g. /htdocs/joomla/templates/rhuk_solarflare_ii). If you decide to unzip to a subfolder (e.g. /htdocs/joomla/templates/rhuk_solarflare_ii/topnav) than you need to give that name in the parameters of your extended menu module (e.g. set Template Name to "topnav/menu.html"). In addition you need to use the also included stylesheet (menu.css). For this you may edit the index.php of the template, use an import within your template_css.css or just copy and past the contents of the menu.css. (Joomla/Mambo does not provide a generic way yet) Note: the menu templates are overwriting the class suffix (and maybe other parameters) of the menu module using the menu.ini. Below is the settings for the top Extended Menu.
After this part is complete you will need to copy the menu Extended Menu for each Submenu. Rename the menu after it is copied. Change the name and publish the menu to the left or right side. Change the Parent Menu Item to the ID of the Parent of the submenu you want to create. Below is an example.
After everything is set up correctly you will have a javascript menu that uses css to style it and each submenu you want has its own menu. |
